CIPC Registration guide

Registering your business with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) is the first step to operating legally in South Africa. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Choose Your Business Structure

Decide how you want to register:

  • Sole Proprietor – Best for freelancers and small businesses.
  • (Pty) Ltd (Private Company) – Ideal for growing businesses.
  • Cooperative – Suitable for businesses owned by multiple people.

Step 2: Register Online

  1. Go to www.cipc.co.za
  2. Create a customer account.
  3. Reserve a business name (optional but recommended).
  4. Complete the registration form.
  5. Upload required documents (ID copy, proof of address, etc.).
  6. Pay the registration fee (typically R125 for a private company).

Step 3: Receive Your Business Documents

Once approved, you’ll get:
✔ Company Registration Certificate
✔ Tax Registration Number (from SARS)
✔ B-BBEE Certificate (if applicable)
